For better or worse, John Williams has completely reshaped the art of the soundtrack. His scores for Star Wars, E.T., and Jaws are simply unforgettable, and his knack for tugging at our heartstrings is uncanny. John Williams: Greatest Hits 1969-1999 collects 30 years of the composer's best-loved themes into one double-CD package. You'll find all the soundtrack moments you'd expect from Indiana Jones, Close Encounters, and Schindler's List, along with a few surprises (The Reivers Americana-filled main theme and Williams's 1984 Olympic theme, for starters). Most of the earlier works have been digitally rerecorded by Williams, so while you may not get the original recording of these works here, nothing shows its age. And although we really do get only his "greatest hits" (the longest track is the nearly 10-minute-long Close Encounters theme), most of these soundtracks can be purchased in their entirety for the true aficionado. John Williams may be an acquired taste, but this set proves why--year after year--he scores some of the most successful films Hollywood can produce. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars great movie collection   July 20, 2010
not mark twain (denver, co)
His music is so recognizable and memorable from movies I had to buy this. The selection of songs and recording quality is great. And listening to the songs reminds me of the great movies they are from.

4 out of 5 stars Just wish it was a bit louder   May 10, 2010

John Williams is amazing and the songs contained here are some of his greatest and most well known. The volume on the cd is a bit lower than some of my others so I find myself turning up the volume on these songs (and then back down on the other cds).

3 out of 5 stars Greatest Hits, but dissapointed quality   March 21, 2010
F. kar Keat (Prai, Penang Malaysia)
I am not going praise how good John Williams is, and how good these masterpieces are, because I am sure if you are reading this, you already know that.

All I want to say is the quality of the recording. If you are looking for audiophile quality from this CD, you will be dissapointed. If you are playing this in your home theatre audiophile system, you will be dissapointed with the bland and flat output.

I hope John William will remake this into Bluray (I would like to see his live performance!) and HD quality. It is about time too.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Collection of Movie Themes   August 30, 2009
R. C. Stewart (Houston, Texas)
This John Williams collection brings back memories of your favorite movies. He is no doubt the best composer hollyhood has ever seen and possibly the best of any composer working today. His music amplifies all the action taking place on the screen. This is a must have for the motion picture devotee.

5 out of 5 stars All the hits on one CD.   June 15, 2009
A. Van Taylor (Apopka, Florida United States)
This CD has all the hits (well almost all of 'em) that you associate with John Williams. It is a wonderful compilation. And most are performed by the London Symphony Orchestra.
