Product Description
Twenty years have passed since Darth Bane, reigning Dark Lord of the Sith, demolished the ancient order devoted to the dark side and reinvented it as a circle of two: one Master to wield the power and pass on the wisdom, and one apprentice to learn, challenge, and ultimately usurp the Dark Lord in a duel to the death. But Bane’s acolyte, Zannah, has yet to engage her Master in mortal combat and prove herself a worthy successor. Determined that the Sith dream of galactic domination will not die with him, Bane vows to learn the secret of a forgotten Dark Lord that will assure the Sith’s immortality–and his own.

A perfect opportunity arises when a Jedi emissary is assassinated on the troubled mining planet Doan, giving Bane an excuse to dispatch his apprentice on a fact-finding mission–while he himself sets out in secret to capture the ancient holocron of Darth Andeddu and its precious knowledge. But Zannah is no fool. She knows that her ruthless Master has begun to doubt her, and she senses that he is hiding something crucial to her future. If she is going to claim the power she craves, she must take action now.

While Bane storms the remote stronghold of a fanatical Sith cult, Zannah prepares for her Master’s downfall by choosing an apprentice of her own: a rogue Jedi cunning and cold-blooded enough to embrace the Sith way and to stand beside her when she at last wrests from Bane the mantle of Dark Lord of the Sith.

But Zannah is not the only one with the desire and power to destroy Darth Bane. Princess Serra of the Doan royal family is haunted by memories of the monstrous Sith soldier who murdered her father and tortured her when she was a child. Bent on retribution, she hires a merciless assassin to find her tormentor–and bring him back alive to taste her wrath.

Only a Sith who has taken down her own Master can become Dark Lord of the Sith. So when Bane suddenly vanishes, Zannah must find him–possibly even rescue him–before she can kill him. And so she pursues her quarry from the grim depths of a ravaged world on the brink of catastrophe to the barren reaches of a desert outpost, where the future of the dark side’s most powerful disciples will be decided, once and for all, by the final, fatal stroke of a lightsaber.

4 out of 5 stars Last book in the Darth Bane trilogy   August 27, 2010
David Pruette (USA)
Dynasty of Evil is the third book in Drew Karpyshyn's trilogy about Darth Bane and the Old Republic. The action in the three books takes place about a thousand years before the time of A New Hope. The first book was Path of Destruction which introduced us to Darth Bane when he first became a Sith and developed the maxim of having only two Sith - a master and an apprentice. The second book was Rule of Two with Darth Bane training his apprentice Zannah and growing ever stronger in the Dark Side with the help of the barnacle-like orbalisks.

Now, in Dynasty of Evil, we see Bane become even more powerful as he waits to see if his apprentice is ready to challenge him. If Zannah is not up to the challenge, Bane may need to find other alternatives. One that particularly appeals to him is to find a means of extending his own life. His scheme intertwines with a mission that he assigns to Zannah, and additional characters play important roles. Serra is the daughter of Caleb, a healer who once saved Bane's life. She is now a princess of the mining world of Doan. Lucia is Serra's bodyguard and, interestingly enough, used to be a member of the Gloom Walkers regiment at the same time as Bane. Then we have The Huntress, who is a Force-sensitive assassin, and Set Harth, an artifact hunter who used to be a Jedi. They all are interesting characters who are heavily involved with the tale.

Mr. Karpyshyn does an excellent job in moving the story along and has some great action sequences as well as an ending that is open to interpretation by the reader. I look forward to seeing what he writes about next in the Star Wars universe.

5 out of 5 stars A fitting end, but easily misinterpreted ending   August 2, 2010
rowdy
Mr. Karpyshyn has delivered a fitting end to the Darth Bane trilogy. No spoilers here, so don't worry. While I personally do not believe he could have written a more captivating and awe-inspiring part of the trilogy than the first novel, nor a darker story than the second, Karpyshyn still definitely finishes up with a nail-biting final chapter.

While the first book centered around just the title character, both the second and third books are filled with intertwining and deep story lines that follow several different characters, not just the Dark Lord himself. All those different story lines come together in the epic final battle that we all new was set in the destiny of the main character from the very beginning. Be warned, however, as the ending of this final novel has been easily misinterpreted by many of its readers. Drew Karpyshyn explains what he meant to show his audience on his website, but the article is full of spoilers, so I wouldn't recommend reading that until you've finished the novel and seen for yourself.

4 out of 5 stars Fitting Capstone, if a bit light   July 25, 2010
Mark Winslow (Alabama)
Drew Karpyshyn succeeded in his original Darth Bane book in giving us a villain to root for; Bane is no shallow "Yay evil!" Sith lord, but rather an ardent student of philosophy who pursues the Sith ways out of honest belief in their superiority. Following his destruction of the Brotherhood of Darkness, Bane has distilled the whole of Sith teachings into himself and established the Rule of Two to ensure that whomever succeeds him will be truly superior. "Dynasty of Evil" addresses the looming conflict between Bane and the apprentice who must overthrow him. While the book provides plenty of action, it is essentially a character drama that allows Karpyshyn to introduce more interesting story elements kin to the orbalisks. While Bane and Zannah prepare to confront the other, a young woman struggles with the Dark Side in wanting to seek vengeance on Bane for torturing her father, and the woman's bodyguard must choose between her friend and Bane, whom she idolized in his Sith army years. Karpyshyn introduces enough rouge elements to keep readers in suspense 'til the last.

The book is a bit short, but in all a fitting resolution for an interesting character and enjoyable series.

5 out of 5 stars A great ending to an already great series   July 8, 2010
Tafru2
This series in itself is very well written and has a great story line into the sith legacy that is both enlightening and educational in the sense of getting a different view of the dark side. A must read indeed.

4 out of 5 stars Cool Books   June 11, 2010
Jordan A. Wright
I'm on the 3rd and I'm guessing final book in the Darth Bane series, and I've very much enjoyed them all. Darth Bane is a cool character, and is responsible for shaping much of what the Sith are in the Star Wars universe.
